Types of ground in Segovia
In Segovia, shales and schists predominate as substrates; materials characterised by their fine-grained nature and low permeability, which can limit water infiltration and the existence of localised shallow aquifers. In addition, compact gravels and sands are found less frequently; if located, they may provide a higher bearing capacity, but the predominance of impermeable ground necessitates careful assessment of the founding depth and the strength of the substrate. Although limestones, dolomites and marbles are less common, they may present local situations that require specific attention in foundation design projects.
The area exhibits high seismicity, with 200 events in the last 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 4.7; this makes it necessary to take this factor into account in the structural calculation and design of the foundation. It is also relevant to consider the possibility of developing karst-related phenomena associated with the presence of limestones and dolomites; therefore, the existence of cavities or instabilities must be verified before proceeding with the foundation works. The non-clayey substrate rules out risks due to expansivity, with karst and seismicity being the priority geotechnical constraints for any type of building intervention in Segovia.
