In Santa María del Páramo, compact gravel and sand predominate, providing excellent bearing capacity for shallow foundations. These soils, which are also very common in the area, facilitate the evacuation of water thanks to their high permeability, thereby benefiting the stability of the foundations provided that loose sandy layers or zones with fine-grained material are not present.

Local seismicity is high, with around 200 events recorded over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 4.7—parameters that require incorporating seismic risk into the geotechnical design of structures.
