Types of ground in San Fernando

In San Fernando, the predominant soils correspond to fine sands and silts, as well as to formations of limestones, dolomites and marbles, which results in a subsoil that is largely granular with significant carbonate layers. These conditions favour good bearing capacity for shallow foundations, provided that any possible soft layers are avoided, and allow the design of traditional foundations, taking into account the possible presence of aquifers, which may affect the behaviour of the ground at depth.

Seismicity in the area is very low, with only two relevant events in the last 30 years and a low maximum magnitude, so it does not represent a significant limitation for structural design. There are no problems associated with karstification, and expansive clays appear only in very limited areas or under climatic conditions that are not conducive to their manifestation, minimising the risk linked to expansivity in foundation projects. The main aspect to consider is the heterogeneity of the materials, which requires a specific geotechnical study of reconnaissance prior to construction.
