In San Amaro, soils of sands, conglomerates and flysch predominate, composed of compact materials with favourable mechanical characteristics. These types of soils provide a good bearing capacity, which simplifies foundation design in most cases. The low permeability of these formations, although they may host small shallow aquifers, contributes to the stability of the footings and reduces the likelihood of problems caused by deep infiltration.

Seismic activity in San Amaro is moderate, with 16 events recorded over the last three decades and a maximum magnitude of 3.8; consequently, seismic risk is limited, with no need for special considerations in the structural design phase. The non-clayey substrate rules out the risk of expansivity, minimising the occurrence of differential settlement due to heave. In this way, the most relevant geotechnical factors are mainly related to lithological uniformity and the correct assessment of water pressure at specific locations.
