Types of ground in San Adrián
In San Adrián, soils of compact gravels and sands predominate, representing more than 30% of the substrate, creating an environment with high bearing capacity and excellent performance for conventional shallow foundations. Deposits with gypsum, anhydrite and salts are observed occasionally, as well as the presence of water masses and fine, silty sandy materials, which may involve certain local variations in strength or in consolidation. The existence of extensive, highly permeable aquifers requires particular attention to the drainage and control of groundwater during the construction phase.
Seismicity in the municipality is high, with around 200 events every 30 years and a maximum magnitude Mmax of 5.2, so seismic response must be a central factor in the structural design of any building. In addition, the possibility of karst development due to gypsum or salts makes it essential to check ground stability before proceeding with foundation works, owing to the risk of dissolution and the generation of subsidence. The absence of an underlying clayey stratum rules out expansivity problems; however, the most relevant constraint in San Adrián is the combination of karst risk and seismic demand.
