Types of ground in Salamanca
In Salamanca, soils formed by sandstones, conglomerates and flysch predominate. These materials tend to offer adequate bearing capacity and predictable behaviour under structural loads. Slates and schists occur only occasionally, which may introduce a certain anisotropy in ground behaviour, but generally the strata present allow the use of conventional shallow foundations. The compact gravels and sands detected in specific locations contribute positively to stability, whereas the occasional presence of fine sands and silts suggests that it is advisable to confirm local compaction before deciding on the optimum foundation type.
The municipality shows very low seismicity, with barely three events over thirty years and a low maximum magnitude, so the risk of structural seismic effects is not particularly relevant in design. Given the absence of clayey ground in the subsoil, any risk associated with expansivity is ruled out. The main point to be checked in geotechnical studies in Salamanca will be verification of compaction in areas where fine sands and silts occur, thereby ensuring the suitability of the selected load-bearing stratum for the foundation.
