Types of ground in Sahagún
In Sahagún, deposits of compact gravel and sand predominate, forming more than 75% of the local soil substrate, providing a base with adequate bearing capacity for most shallow foundation solutions. The secondary presence of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, together with smaller fractions of fine sands and silts, suggests local variability; however, the risk of low capacities only appears in these latter materials. The general permeability of the area tends to be low, although aquifers may exist at depth whose interaction with the foundation must be assessed when major excavations are planned.
Seismicity in Sahagún is considered high, with more than 200 recorded events in the last 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 4.7, making seismic analysis essential in structural designs. Although some expansive clays are present in a subordinate manner and associated with climatic zones without an anhydrous deficit, the overall risk due to expansivity is low and does not represent the conditioning factor. In summary, the main geotechnical constraint for this municipality is the high seismicity, which must be a key criterion in the planning of foundations and structures.
