Types of ground in Riudecols

In Riudecols, the predominant bedrock mainly consists of slates and schists, followed in smaller proportions by granite, gneiss, igneous rocks and some sedimentary formations such as sandstones and conglomerates. These materials, for the most part of a hard and competent nature, provide good bearing capacity for shallow foundations, provided that the levels of alteration are low. Areas of compact gravel and sand suitable for foundations are also noteworthy, whereas fine sands and silts, which occur occasionally, may require additional attention to prevent unwanted settlement. The overall impermeability of the ground implies the possible presence of shallow aquifers, an aspect that must be considered in the design of drainage systems and in the management of water during excavation.

The seismicity recorded in the municipality is very low, with only 5 events over 30 years and a very low maximum magnitude; therefore, the seismic risk for buildings is practically negligible. It is worth noting the potential presence of karstification in the ground, a circumstance that requires prior verification of cavities or conduits before the design of foundations, since their existence could compromise stability. On the other hand, as the bedrock is non-clayey, the risk of expansivity is ruled out. Thus, the most relevant geotechnical factor in Riudecols will be the investigation of the possible karst and the detailed characterisation of the rock bedrock prior to the start of any construction project.
