Types of ground in Ribera de Arriba
In Ribera de Arriba, soils formed by limestones, dolomites and marbles predominate, representing the most significant geotechnical matrix in the area. This substratum usually presents high mechanical strength, which provides good conditions for bearing capacity for the foundations of buildings. However, the low near-surface permeability of these materials prevents the rapid discharge of water at the surface, and they may host aquifers at depth. Fine sands, silts and the occasional presence of slates and schists can lead to localised variations in the ground’s response, although they do not generally affect bearing capacity. It is crucial to correctly determine the type of foundation, adapting it to the heterogeneity of the materials present and to the possibility of finding water in the subsoil.
The seismic activity recorded in the municipality is moderate, with 27 events over the last 30 years and a maximum magnitude (Mmax) of 2. Although this level of seismicity does not pose a considerable threat to buildings, it requires integration into the geotechnical study in order to ensure the stability of the structure throughout its service life. Since the substratum is not clayey, the presence of risks associated with expansivity is ruled out. Nevertheless, given a clearly karstic context due to the dominance of limestones and dolomites, it is essential to thoroughly verify the existence of cavities at depth before designing any foundation; this is the main limiting factor for any geotechnical study in Ribera de Arriba.
