Types of ground in Riaza
In Riaza, the predominant geotechnical strata mostly correspond to slates and schists, which are characterised by low permeability and good structural stability, offering a high bearing capacity for shallow foundations, provided they do not present significant alterations. The occasional presence of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, as well as compacted gravels and sands, may locally improve bearing conditions, although confirmation is required of the compactness and continuity of these strata. Given the limited representation of limestones and dolomites, a very low incidence of phenomena associated with dissolution is expected, although these materials may present locally higher-permeability zones or karstification.
Riaza has high seismic activity, with more than 150 events over the last 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 4.7, so seismic design regulations must be considered carefully in all structural projects. There is a possibility of karst development, especially in the scarce stretches of carbonate rocks; before founding, this condition requires specific checking to rule out underground voids or instabilities. The main substrate is not clayey, eliminating the risk of expansivity as a relevant factor. Thus, the most notable technical constraint in Riaza is seismicity, together with the possible point presence of karst.
