Types of ground in Quismondo
In Quismondo, the geological substrate is dominated by the presence of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, accounting for more than 75% of the soils, together with a notable proportion of limestones, dolomites and marbles. These materials usually provide good mechanical properties and an acceptable bearing capacity, although it is essential to take into account the inherent heterogeneity of the flysch, which can affect the uniformity of geotechnical behaviour. The presence of extensive and discontinuous aquifers, with moderate permeability and production, requires accurate hydrogeological characterisation before deciding on the most suitable foundation type.
Seismicity in the area is high, with more than 200 events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 5.1, which makes it necessary to incorporate seismically resistant criteria into structural design. There are no signs of significant karstification, which rules out risks associated with collapses due to dissolution. However, although the predominant clays are not expansive, there may be a risk of expansivity in areas with dispersed clayey matrix, which must be assessed to prevent problems of deformation in foundations. The main geotechnical constraint in Quismondo is therefore the high level of seismicity and the local variability of the substrate—both critical aspects for the planning of stable and safe foundations.
