In Pueblonuevo del Guadiana, compact gravel and sand substrates predominate, accompanied by sandstones and conglomerates, which provide a solid foundation with good bearing capacities for the foundations. The presence of fine sands and silts occurs only occasionally, so in certain locations it is necessary to analyse their compaction in order to avoid differential settlements. The ground permeability is high due to the notable presence of extensive and productive aquifers, which promotes natural drainage though it may require precautions to prevent seepage during the foundation execution phase.

Seismicity in the municipality is notable, with 52 events recorded in the last 30 years, although the maximum magnitude observed (Mmax 4.4) does not exceed the threshold for earthquakes that are structurally conditioning; however, it is recommended to review seismic behaviour in special projects. Since the dominant substrate is not clayey, the risk of expansivity is practically ruled out. Thus, the main geotechnical constraint is associated with local variations in grain size distribution and permeability—aspects that are essential to analyse in detail in each geotechnical study.
