In Porto do Son, the subsurface is dominated by the presence of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch formations, which favourably affects the bearing capacity of the ground. These lithologies provide a solid and stable foundation for shallow foundations, allowing the use of direct solutions and minimising the risk of differential settlement. The low permeability typical of these materials limits the migration of groundwater, although small near-surface aquifers may exist and must be identified during the geotechnical study to avoid problems in the construction phase.

Seismic activity in Porto do Son is moderate, with around 20 events in the last 30 years and a recorded maximum magnitude of 1.8, i.e. very low levels that scarcely condition structural design. There is no evidence of significant expansion, as the non-clayey substratum rules out swelling risks. The main factor to consider in the geotechnical study lies in the accurate assessment of local permeability and the identification of specific flysch conditions, in order to adapt the foundation solutions to any possible shallow local aquifers.
