Types of ground in Piélagos

In Piélagos, formations of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch predominate, accompanied by notable outcrops of limestones, dolomites and marbles. These materials form a competent subsoil, generally suitable for supporting shallow foundations, where bearing capacity is usually high. However, in areas where fine sands, silts and, to a lesser extent, gypsum, anhydrite or salts crop out, a detailed assessment is required, since these materials may exhibit lower compactness or a certain risk of dissolution, which can reduce the bearing capacity and condition the type of foundation that is viable.

Seismic activity in Piélagos is very low, with hardly any events recorded over 30 years and a maximum magnitude (Mmax) of 1.9, which implies a negligible seismic risk in structural design. The non-argillaceous subsoil eliminates the risk of expansivity for most plots. Nevertheless, it is essential to verify the presence of karst-related phenomena associated with limestones and dolomites before building, as these may compromise long-term stability. The possible presence of gypsum and salts also calls for caution due to the risk of dissolution. The main geotechnical constraint is the need to investigate the existence and extent of karst and zones with potential dissolution beneath the foundation footprint.
