Types of ground in Pego

In Pego, the subsoil is dominated by formations of limestones, dolomites and marbles, which occupy almost half of the municipality and provide a solid, competent foundation for shallow or semi-deep foundations. The local presence of white or soft expansive clays may pose a specific difficulty, although, in general terms, the large surface area of carbonate materials ensures good bearing capacity. Compact gravels and sands, although represented occasionally, offer favourable behaviour for supporting loads.

Seismicity in Pego is very low, with barely one recorded event every 30 years and a low maximum magnitude, so this factor has very little impact on construction design. However, it is relevant to consider the possible presence of karst phenomena in the carbonate materials, which must be verified by the relevant geotechnical study before carrying out any foundation, as they can cause subsidence or hidden cavities. The non-clayey subsoil rules out the risk of expansivity, so karst control becomes the main constraint for projects in the area.
