In Paterna del Campo, slates and schists predominate, followed to a significant extent by limestones, dolomites and marbles. This mixed substrate generally provides a good bearing capacity, particularly in the carbonate lithologies, although slates and schists may exhibit variable strength depending on their degree of weathering. The low-permeability characteristics of these formations mean that natural drainage may be limited; therefore, when designing foundations it is advisable to consider possible accumulations of water at the surface.

Seismic activity within the municipal term is very low, with only 5 recorded events over the last 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 2,4, so it does not constitute a significant constraint for structural design. As no karst has been found and no soluble salts or expansive clay soils appear, the substrate presents no risks associated with expansivity or dissolution. The main geotechnical consideration for the area lies in the variability of strength of the basic materials and in managing the ground’s impermeability.
