Types of ground in Parres
In the municipality of Parres, the dominant geological substrate is made up of limestones, dolomites and marbles, accompanied in smaller proportions by shales, schists, and occasionally sandstones and conglomerates. These materials generally have a high bearing capacity, which favours the execution of shallow (direct) foundations. However, the presence of shales and schists can introduce heterogeneity in the ground, requiring a detailed analysis of the stratigraphy and mechanical properties in order to optimise the foundation design. In addition, the scarce presence of silts and sands indicates a low likelihood of encountering soft soils, limiting the need for ground improvement solutions in these cases.
Seismicity in Parres is high, with more than 150 recorded events in the last 30 years, reaching a maximum magnitude of 4.2. Although the seismic hazard does not reach extreme values, this activity must be taken into account in structural design to ensure safety against ground movements. An additional critical aspect is the existence of a half karstic medium, given the abundance of limestones and dolomites; the appearance of cavities, voids or dissolution processes can locally compromise the stability of the foundations, so it is essential to verify the presence of karstification before building. Since the substrate is not clayey, the risk of expansivity is ruled out, and the main limiting factor is the possible presence of karst processes in the ground.
