Types of ground in Pals

In the municipality of Pals, the dominant subsoil is composed of fine sands and silts, representing 50% of the soils present and being characterised by its frequent occurrence. These formations, together with sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, exhibit favourable geotechnical characteristics in terms of bearing capacity, although the occasional presence of clays and deltaic peats suggests that these materials should be avoided as a support level during the foundation process, as they may compromise the stability of the structures. Therefore, the choice of the foundation base must be made after the correct identification of compact load-bearing layers, while avoiding areas that are soft or saturated.

The Pals area is characterised by very low seismicity, with only around 1 event in 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 2.4, which implies that the seismic requirements in structural design are not particularly stringent. The risk of expansivity is practically ruled out because the subsoil is not clayey, reinforcing the suitability of the ground for construction. In conclusion, the main conditioning factor lies in the location of soft or saturated soils and the appropriate selection of the load-bearing horizon.
