In Os de Balaguer, the most common soils correspond to compacted gravels and sands, combined with sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, which generally ensure good bearing capacities for direct foundations in buildings. Smaller proportions of gypsum, anhydrite and salts are also identified, as well as fine sands and silts; accordingly, it is essential to consider the risk of dissolution associated with the eventual presence of gypsum and salts, especially in areas where the groundwater level may be influential.

Seismicity in the municipality is moderate, with 12 recorded events over the last 30 years and a low maximum magnitude (Mmax 2.7), so the seismic constraint is not relevant for structural design. The predominant substrate is not clayey, which rules out risks of expansiveness, but the possible existence of karstic processes in the ground makes it necessary to carry out specific checks before determining the foundation type and depth; this is the main geotechnical constraint to be studied.
