In Ortuella, soils formed by limestones, dolomites and marbles predominate, accounting for more than 95% of the geological surface. This type of substrate, typically competent and with high bearing capacity, allows direct foundations when conditions are homogeneous, although the minor presence of urban anthropogenic backfill may require specific stability and compaction studies for projects in urban environments. The generally low permeability minimises the risk of delayed collapses, although shallow aquifers may be found locally.

With regard to seismic hazard, Ortuella shows notable activity with 94 events over 30 years, although the maximum recorded magnitude is moderate (Mmax 3.7), so seismicity partly affects structural design calculations. In addition, the presence of carbonate materials makes it necessary to verify the existence of karst processes, given the inherent risk of cavities or underground instabilities that can critically affect the foundation. The absence of clays rules out expansiveness problems, with prior karst verification being the main factor determining the geotechnical study in the municipality.
