Types of ground in Ontinyent
In Ontinyent, the ground is predominantly formed by limestones, dolomites and marbles, compact rocks with high geotechnical competence. These formations confer good bearing capacity to the ground, facilitating shallow foundation solutions in most cases. Clays and hard marls, as well as deposits of fine sands and silts, occur sporadically and generally do not condition the design, although it is always necessary to confirm their continuity and depth by means of a detailed geotechnical study. The low overall permeability favours stability and reduces impacts from rising water, except where local aquifers exist.
With regard to geotechnical constraints, Ontinyent has moderate seismicity, with 23 events in the last 30 years and a low maximum magnitude (Mmax 3), so seismic risk is not considered significant in standard structural design. The presence of karst in the limestone substratum makes it necessary to check for cavities or dissolution processes before proceeding with the foundation, as these could induce unforeseen settlements. The absence of expansive clays in the substratum rules out risks associated with ground expansivity, leaving as the determining factor and one to be verified the possible presence of karst-related phenomena for the correct selection of the foundation solution.
