In Nívar, schist and slate soils predominate, present in more than half of the municipality and characterised by low permeability and medium strength, which favourably influences bearing capacity and the choice of types of shallow or semi-deep foundations depending on local compaction. In the background, limestones, dolomites and marbles appear, formations with higher strength and suitable for founding, although in certain areas clays and peats of deltaic origin are found that must be avoided as a bearing stratum due to their low bearing capacity and high deformability.

The seismic risk in Nívar is very low, with a maximum recorded magnitude of 1.5 and only two events in the last 30 years, so seismicity does not represent a relevant constraint for structural design. There are no risks associated with expansive soils, since the substrate is not clayey, but a specific check must be carried out for the presence of karstification in the limestones and dolomites before founding, as this phenomenon can generate instability due to voids.
