In Mutxamel, sandstone, conglomerates and flysch predominate as subsurface materials, accounting for more than 40% of the soils, accompanied in significant proportions by limestones, dolomites and marbles. These rock strata provide good bearing capacity for building projects, allowing direct and conventional foundations in most cases. However, areas with fine sands, silts, gravels and compacted sands are also identified, which require appropriate characterisation in order to rule out differential settlement problems, particularly in areas where the materials are less competent.

With regard to seismic hazard, Mutxamel shows very low activity, with just four events in the last three decades and a maximum magnitude of 2.1, so seismicity does not represent a relevant constraint for structural design. Given the significant presence of limestones and dolomites, it is essential to examine the possible existence of karst processes before carrying out any foundation works, as underground voids can affect stability. As the substrate is non-clayey, the risk of expansivity is ruled out, placing the main constraint on verifying the karst.
