In the municipality of Moratalla, formations of limestones, dolomites and marbles predominate. These materials offer a high bearing capacity for buildings, as they present compact and rigid structures. To a lesser extent, fine sands, silts, sandstones and conglomerates are also identified, as well as the occasional presence of gypsum, anhydrite and salts, and hard soils of clays and marls. Given the karstified incidence of the limestones and dolomites, it is essential to carry out a thorough karst verification before designing the foundation, as voids and cavities may be located that could affect the ground’s stability. The main geotechnical constraint in Moratalla comes from the possible karstification of the calcareous ground and from the localised presence of gypsum; these factors can significantly influence the founded behaviour.
