Types of ground in Moratalla

In the municipality of Moratalla, formations of limestones, dolomites and marbles predominate. These materials offer a high bearing capacity for buildings, as they present compact and rigid structures. To a lesser extent, fine sands, silts, sandstones and conglomerates are also identified, as well as the occasional presence of gypsum, anhydrite and salts, and hard soils of clays and marls. The relatively low permeability of these materials limits infiltration, although surface aquifers associated with fractured structures may exist. It is important to take into account the risk of dissolution where gypsum and salts occur, and also to avoid the use of sludge or areas over water bodies as a foundation level.

Moratalla has notable seismicity, with 172 events over 30 years and a maximum recorded magnitude of 4.1, which is why the geotechnical study must carefully assess the influence of microseismic activity on structural design. No risk of expansivity is detected, since the dominant substrate is not clayey. Given the karstified incidence of the limestones and dolomites, it is essential to carry out a thorough karst verification before designing the foundation, as voids and cavities may be located that could affect the ground’s stability. The main geotechnical constraint in Moratalla comes from the possible karstification of the calcareous ground and from the localised presence of gypsum; these factors can significantly influence the founded behaviour.
