Types of ground in Móra la Nova

In Móra la Nova, the dominant geotechnical substrate is made up mainly of compacted gravels and sands, accompanied by smaller proportions of fine sands, silts, sandstones and conglomerates. These materials usually provide adequate bearing capacity for construction and allow a flexible design of shallow and deep foundations, provided that local characteristics are verified through the corresponding geotechnical study. In general, the formations present have low permeability at the surface, although they may host aquifers at greater depth, which could influence the choice of foundation type and the management of groundwater.

As regards seismic behaviour, Móra la Nova records very low seismicity, with a single event in the last 30 years and a maximum magnitude of Mmax 1.8, which minimises the need for specific seismic requirements in structural design. The absence of karst and of expansive materials of clayey character, confirmed by the non-clayey nature of the substrate, reduces the associated geotechnical risks and facilitates foundation operations. The main constraint for the geotechnical study in this area will be related to the grain-size heterogeneity of the deposits and the precise identification of the load-bearing layers, as well as the management of any deep aquifers.
