Types of ground in Montizón

At Montizón, the geological substratum is mainly dominated by slates and schists, which gives the ground low permeability conditions and a bearing capacity generally medium, suitable for conventional shallow foundations. However, the occasional presence of limestones, dolomites and marbles implies the possibility of finding localised areas with higher bearing capacity, but which require special attention during the reconnaissance phases due to the potential development of karstic cavities. The occasional appearance of gypsum, salts and anhydrite also introduces the risk of dissolution processes, which is an aspect to take into account when choosing the foundation support level.

With regard to seismic activity, Montizón shows very low seismicity, with only 8 events over 30 years and an Mmax of 2.4, so the associated risk is very low and not a determining factor for structural design. The substratum is not clayey; therefore the risk of expansivity is ruled out. Given the geological setting and the presence of both limestones and a potentially karstified environment, the main constraint for the geotechnical study is centred on the necessary characterisation and verification of the existence of karstic cavities before carrying out any foundation in the municipality.
