In Monterroso, the dominant ground is composed mainly of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, representing about 52% of the soils, complemented by slates and schists. These lithologies, which are competent and generally impermeable or with very low permeability, offer good bearing capacity for shallow foundations, provided that highly weathered areas are avoided. The presence of superficial aquifers is occasional and is associated with local fracturing, so any possible water inflows must be considered in the design of the strip footings or ground slabs.

Since the substratum is markedly non-clayey, the risk associated with expansive soils is ruled out and there is no problem related to karstification. Consequently, the main factors for the geotechnical study lie in the consolidation and compactness of the sedimentary formations, as well as in assessing the possible presence of localised aquifers during excavations.
