In Montblanc, soils are predominantly formed by sandstones, conglomerates and flysch—competent materials that generally offer an intermediate-to-high bearing capacity, suitable in general for shallow foundations when they are sufficiently compacted. These units are accompanied by smaller outcrops of limestones, dolomites and marbles, as well as the occasional presence of gypsum, anhydrite and salts; all of these are important when assessing risks associated both with stability and with possible dissolution processes. Low near-surface permeability is characteristic, although there may be relevant deep aquifers in the local hydrogeological context.

Seismicity in Montblanc is considered notable, as around 80 events have been recorded over 30 years, although the maximum magnitude observed (Mmax 2,9) remains moderate. The potential presence of karst in the limestone sectors requires particular attention to the existence of voids or cavities before defining foundation solutions, as these may involve delayed collapses. The non-clayey substrate rules out the risk of expansivity, with control of any gypsum dissolution and analysis of the karst being the main geotechnical constraints in this setting.
