Types of ground in Minaya

In Minaya, a substrate composed of limestones, dolomites and marbles predominates, representing more than 70% of the materials present. These stony soils generally offer good bearing-capacity conditions for foundations, provided they are found in a massive state and without significant alterations. Areas with a punctual presence of overconsolidated clays and marls are usually hard, which, as far as possible, minimises differential settlements, whereas occasional horizons of compact gravel and sand may allow for direct foundation solutions if their thickness and continuity justify it. Layers of expansive clays and fine sands are poorly developed and, in most cases, can be ruled out as the principal load-bearing level.

The municipality records moderate seismicity, with 32 events over 30 years, although with low magnitude (Mmax 2.5), meaning it does not represent a relevant constraint for the usual structures. However, due to the dominant presence of limestones and dolomites, it is essential to carry out a prior check for possible karst processes before laying out any foundation, since the existence of cavities or dissolutions can compromise ground stability. The absence of a clayey substrate eliminates the risk of volumetric expansivity. The main factor to consider in the geotechnical studies in Minaya is, without doubt, the assessment of karstification of the rock mass.
