Types of ground in Meruelo
In Meruelo, the predominant ground conditions are composed of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, with an occasional presence of limestones, dolomites and marbles. These formations generally provide a medium to high bearing capacity, although the low permeability may condition the discharge of groundwater and affect the stability of shallow foundations. In areas with carbonate materials, the risk of encountering cavities associated with karst must be assessed before defining the foundation in order to guarantee the safety and long-term performance of the structure.
Seismic activity in the municipality is notable, with 145 events recorded over 30 years, although the maximum recorded magnitude is moderate (Mmax 4), suggesting the need for special monitoring in the structural design phase. The development of karst processes in calcareous levels reinforces the need to carry out specific geotechnical investigations to detect possible voids. The absence of expansive clays eliminates concern about expansivity, so the main geotechnical constraint in Meruelo is the possible presence of karst and the heterogeneous nature of the bedrock.
