Types of ground in Medina de las Torres
The subsoil of Medina de las Torres is dominated mainly by slates and schists, metamorphic materials characterised by a compact structure and low permeability, which generally ensures good bearing capacity for shallow or semi-deep direct foundations. The occasional presence of granite, gneiss and other igneous rocks adds further strength to the ground, whereas the levels of sandstones and conglomerates may vary in terms of compactness. There are also limestone and dolomite formations in smaller proportions; although these are locally harder, they require a specific assessment. The minor presence of hard clays does not represent a significant constraint. In general, given the predominantly lithological nature, the foundation design is favourable, although it will be necessary to adapt the foundation type to each area according to the dominant substrate.
With regard to seismicity, the municipality shows very low seismic activity, with a maximum of 4 events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 2.7, so this factor does not pose relevant constraints for geotechnical design. However, the existence of carbonate materials such as limestones and dolomites implies the possible presence of karst processes that may generate voids or cavities in the substrate; this aspect must be carefully verified through tests or specific studies before carrying out any foundation work. The non-clayey substrate rules out the risk of expansiveness, so the main constraint for the planning and design of foundations will be to check and locate the karst in areas where limestones or dolomites crop out.
