Types of ground in Medellín
In Medellín, geotechnical studies identify as dominant soils compact gravels and sands, together with a significant presence of groundwater masses. These materials usually show good bearing capacity, which favours the selection of shallow foundations in most cases, always bearing in mind the possible presence of saturated zones. Occasionally, fine sands, silts and sub-strata of a detrital nature or sedimentary rock appear, which may locally reduce resistance and require additional studies of stability and consolidation at specific points within the municipality.
The seismicity recorded in the Medellín area is classified as notable, with 52 events over the last 30 years and a maximum magnitude (Mmax) of 4.4, which implies the need to incorporate seismic criteria in structural design even though the critical values of other areas are not reached. As no karst development or risks associated with expansive clays are detected (non-clayey substratum), the most relevant conditioning factor for the foundation is the variability of the water table, particularly in sectors close to groundwater masses.
