Types of ground in Marmolejo
In Marmolejo, the geotechnical subsoil is dominated by the presence of slates and schists, which account for more than 40% of the outcropping materials. This metamorphic nature, generally compact, provides a solid foundation for shallow foundations, although there may be occasional levels of near-surface alteration. The coexistence of limestones, dolomites and marbles, together with the presence of granitoids and gneisses, increases bearing capacity in specific areas, favouring shallow foundation alternatives throughout most of the municipality. Detrital formations such as sands, silts and gravels are infrequent, and must be assessed locally due to their lower degree of compaction and possible problems with differential settlement.
Seismicity in Marmolejo is considered moderate, with 12 recorded events over the last three decades and a maximum magnitude (Mmax) of 3.6, which represents a low seismic demand that does not usually condition the customary structural design. There is no evidence of significant karst development or the presence of expansive soils, as the evaluated subsoil rules out the risk of expansivity. In conclusion, the load-bearing nature and low permeability of the underlying materials are the main factors conditioning the geotechnical study, simplifying the foundation design requirements and reducing the likelihood of ground-related defects.
