Types of ground in Marina de Cudeyo

In Marina de Cudeyo, the subsurface is dominated by limestones, dolomites and marbles, which translates into a rocky stratum with high bearing capacity that is favourable for direct foundations on rock. Alongside these, there is secondary presence of fine sands, silts and sandstones with conglomerates; these materials may exhibit variability in their strength and stiffness, and therefore require detailed analysis if they are considered as the support level. The occasional occurrence of gypsum, anhydrite and salts indicates the possibility of dissolution processes that may affect foundation stability, particularly in areas where the salts are close to the surface.

Seismicity in the municipality is considered to be very low, with barely 1 event every 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 2.1, so it does not represent a relevant constraint for structural design. However, the existence of karst processes linked to the limestone and dolomitic formations implies the possibility of underground cavities or dissolutions; it is essential to verify the presence of karst before planning deep or shallow foundations. As the substratum is not clayey, the risk of soil expansivity is ruled out, with karst being the main geotechnical constraint to be investigated in detail during the geotechnical study phase.
