Types of ground in Los Silos
In the municipality of Los Silos, the substratum is predominantly granite, gneiss and other igneous rocks, which give the ground an excellent bearing capacity and stability for the foundation of buildings. The occasional presence of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch does not represent significant weak elements, and the overconsolidated clays and marls, although hard, do not increase the risk of deformability under load. In general, the rocky nature of these soils allows the design of direct and shallow foundations with high permissible values for bearing capacity, favouring structural safety and reducing the need for deep foundations.
With regard to seismicity, Los Silos shows moderate seismic activity with 11 events every 30 years and a low maximum magnitude (Mmax 2.2), which limits the requirement for special conditions in the calculation of seismic actions for structural design. Since there is no risk of karst nor expansivity problems associated with unstable clays, the main technical constraint is derived from the hardness of the substratum and the appropriate characterisation of the fracturing and weathering of the rocks in the geotechnical study.
