Types of ground in Los Arcos
In Los Arcos, the dominant geological substrate is primarily made up of limestones, dolomites and marbles, accompanied in smaller proportions by sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, as well as certain levels of compact gravels and sands. These materials are characterised by their good load-bearing capacity, which generally favours the feasibility of shallow strip and direct foundations, although the frequent presence of carbonate formations suggests that it is always necessary to verify the existence of voids or cavities associated with prior karstification processes before carrying out the works.
Seismicity in the municipality is high, with approximately 200 events recorded over 30 years and an Mmax of 5.2, an aspect that imposes the requirement to consider specific seismic requirements in structural design and in the foundation solutions adopted. Although the substrate is non-clayey and therefore rules out problems related to expansivity, the main constraint in Los Arcos is the combination of seismic activity and the potential karstification of the ground; both factors require detailed geotechnical studies before building.
