Types of ground in Lorca
In Lorca, the geological substrate is dominated by shales and schists, complemented by fine sandstones and silts, which implies formations that are commonly impermeable or of low permeability. These materials exhibit a variable bearing capacity that favours shallow foundations in stable areas; however, in fine-grained soils it is necessary to analyse the possibility of differential settlement. In addition, the occasional presence of hard clays and levels of compacted gravels and sands allows, in specific locations, an improvement in the response to structural loads.
Seismicity in Lorca is a relevant factor, with more than 150 recorded events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 5.4, which makes it necessary to incorporate anti-seismic criteria in the structural design of any building. Given the existence of limestones, dolomites and marbles in part of the territory, it is essential to carry out a thorough verification of the karst potential before defining the foundation system, as the presence of cavities or instabilities associated with them can represent a critical constraint for the feasibility and safety of the project. The risk of expansiveness is ruled out by the predominance of a non-clayey substrate.
