Types of ground in Laredo

In Laredo, the dominant geological substratum is made up of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, which gives the ground good bearing capacity for most foundation projects. Additionally, although areas of limestones, dolomites and marbles and interbedded layers of fine sands and silts can be found, the rare occurrence of expansive clays and anthropogenic infill minimises the incidence of problems related to differential movements or loss of strength at the support. The generally low permeability of these formations may create localised superficial aquifers, but it does not critically affect the mechanical behaviour of the foundation.

Seismicity in the municipality is very low, with only a single significant event recorded over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 1.5, so it does not constitute a relevant limitation for structural design. However, there is a possibility of karst development in the areas with limestones and dolomites, so it is essential to verify the presence of cavities before planning deep or shallow foundations. The absence of an clayey substratum rules out risks associated with expansiveness. The main focus therefore needs to be on the characterisation and investigation of karst as a geotechnical constraint in this area.
