In La Vall de Bianya, soils formed by sandstones, conglomerates and flysch predominate, all of them with a low presence of clayey materials. These formations usually display a competent structure and favourable bearing capacity for most shallow foundations, although on occasion they may be locally altered by clayey layers interbedded in the flysch. The low permeability typical of these strata ensures good performance with respect to the migration of water, while also allowing aquifers to exist at depth, which is an aspect to be considered if deep excavations are planned.

Seismicity in the area is very low, with only 2 recorded events in 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 1.6, so the seismic risk is practically negligible in conventional building projects. Likewise, as the substrate is non-clayey, the presence of problems arising from expansivity is ruled out. Overall, the main attention should be focused on the local characterisation of the thickness and continuity of these formations in order to select an optimal foundation level.
