Types of ground in Jumilla

In Jumilla, soils of fine sands and silts predominate, representing almost one third of the local substrate and are identified as frequent. This type of material usually exhibits a medium-to-low bearing capacity, often requiring detailed characterisation to define the optimal foundation type. In smaller proportions, sandstone, conglomerates and flysch are found, together with intervals of compacted gravels, which can locally improve ground strength and allow shallow foundations in favourable areas. Limestone, dolomite and marble formations, although occasional, could present suitable zones for founding, but they require additional checks due to their behaviour in the presence of cavities or karstification processes.

Seismicity in Jumilla is notable, with 168 events recorded over the last 30 years, although the maximum observed magnitude (Mmax 4.4) does not exceed the 4.5 threshold. However, the high frequency of seismic events suggests considering additional seismic requirements when designing structures, especially on ground susceptible to instabilities. The risk of expansivity is nil, as the substrate is not clayey. Nevertheless, the presence of carbonate formations makes it necessary to verify the existence of karst processes before any foundation, as they may cause instability or differential settlement. Therefore, the main geotechnical constraint is the possible presence of karst, which must be assessed in detail in each geotechnical study.
