Types of ground in Irurtzun
In Irurtzun, the predominant geological substrate is made up of limestones, dolomites and marbles, present in more than 77% of the municipality, which suggests competent ground with very good bearing capacity for direct foundations. Fine sands and silts appear occasionally, but they do not significantly influence the choice of foundation type. These formations are usually very poorly permeable, although they may host localised shallow aquifers; therefore, it is relevant to take into account the possible presence of groundwater in the initial stages of the project.
The region exhibits very low seismicity, with only 1 documented event over 30 years and a low maximum magnitude (Mmax 1.5), so it does not represent a relevant constraint in the design of structures. However, due to the considerable extent of the carbonate substrate, there is potential for karstification, so it is essential to investigate any possible cavities or dissolution processes before executing the foundations. The risk of expansivity is ruled out because the site is underlain by a non-clayey substrate. Thus, the assessment of karst-related phenomena is the main aspect to be studied in the geotechnical study report for Irurtzun.
