Types of ground in Illas
In the municipality of Illas, a substratum composed mainly of slates and schists predominates. These metamorphic materials are characterised by low permeability and moderate mechanical competence, which provides an adequate bearing capacity for shallow foundations in most of the area covered by the municipality. Limestone, dolomite and marble formations, although infrequent, may require specific studies due to their different geotechnical behaviour. The scarce presence of fine sands and silts does not indicate a significant trend, but as a general rule, layer thicknesses and behaviour should be checked to ensure the suitability of the supporting ground.
The seismicity in Illas shows a high level of activity, with around 200 events over 30 years, although the maximum recorded magnitude is 4.2, which points to considerable activity but without reaching critical levels. No expansivity risks are identified, given that the dominant substratum is not clayey. However, the existence of carbonate formations makes it essential to verify the presence of karst, especially in localised areas, as it could lead to dissolution problems and, consequently, affect foundation safety. The main constraint for geotechnical studies is the need to rule out karst-related phenomena in the area where the development will be implemented, which should be prioritised in the work campaign.
