In Huércal-Overa, fine sands and silts predominate, followed by a significant presence of slates and schists, together with smaller proportions of limestones, dolomites and marbles. These materials, for the most part, provide a variable bearing capacity, where the fine sands and silts may require detailed analysis for possible settlement, whereas gravel layers and compacted soils are more suitable as a foundation base. No risks associated with expansive clays are presented thanks to the predominantly non-clayey substrate, ruling out problems of expansivity. Given the occasional presence of calcareous formations, it is essential to verify the existence of karst before designing foundations, as this may significantly condition their feasibility. The main local conditioning factor is the combination of possible karst processes and seismicity, which require specific geotechnical studies for each site.
