Types of ground in Huelva
In Huelva, hard materials such as limestones, dolomites and marbles predominate, followed by slates, schists and, to a lesser extent, sandstones and conglomerates. These lithologies generally offer good bearing capacity and are suitable for shallow foundations, except in specific areas with fine sands or silts, which may require caution due to their lower density. Most of the soils present have low permeability, which limits the migration of water and can favour the stability of the foundations, although it is important to consider the presence of possible shallow aquifers.
Seismicity in the area is very low, with only about 4 events in the last 30 years and a very low maximum magnitude (Mmax 2.1), so seismic action does not represent a relevant constraint for structural projects. In addition, as the bedrock is non-clayey, there are no expansivity risks that could affect the stability of the buildings. The main point to assess in the geotechnical study will be the proper in situ characterisation of the less frequent levels of sands and silts, verifying their suitability as a safe support.
