In Guadalcanal, the dominant subsoil is composed mainly of phyllites and schists, metamorphic-structure materials that generally confer an acceptable bearing capacity, although their response depends on the degree of weathering and fracturing. To a lesser extent, limestones, dolomites and marbles also occur, as well as outcrops of granite and gneiss, providing areas of greater competence. The low permeability of most of these formations limits the presence of significant deep aquifers, although local shallow aquifers may occur. The choice of foundation type should take into account the frequency of firm rock strata and the possible small-scale heterogeneity.

Seismic activity in Guadalcanal is very low, with only 7 events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 2.2, so seismicity is not a relevant constraint for structural design. However, given the presence of carbonate levels (limestones and dolomites), there is potential for karst development, which requires verification of voids or dissolution processes before proceeding with the foundations. The non-clayey subsoil rules out expansivity risks, so the main aspect to be assessed in the geotechnical study will be the stability of the ground in relation to the possible presence of karst processes.
