Types of ground in The Granada
In La Granada, a substrate composed of fine sands and silts predominates, which generally favours a good bearing capacity and allows the execution of shallow foundations, provided that uniformity is verified and that there is an absence of compressible materials. Although expansive clays and, locally, gypsum, anhydrite and salts appear occasionally, sectors with muds and peats are also identified which must be avoided as a bearing stratum due to their high compressibility and low strength. Areas where these materials are recognised require specific foundation solutions and attention to the possible dissolution in the presence of gypsum and salts.
Seismicity in the municipality is high, with 200 events recorded over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 3.8, although without exceeding critical values; the seismic action must be assessed in the design, especially for distinctive buildings. The presence of karst at certain points means it must be verified in advance by means of a specific geotechnical study, as cavities or subsidence could exist that would condition the stability of the foundation. In conclusion, the greatest precaution is dictated by the need to identify and analyse any potential karst activity beneath the future buildings.
