Types of ground in Funes
In the municipality of Funes, compact gravels and sands predominate; soils recognised for their high bearing capacity and favourable characteristics for the direct foundation of buildings. Occasionally, layers of sandstone, conglomerates and flysch occur, together with gypsum, anhydrite and salts, which may induce dissolution processes under certain hydrogeological conditions. The presence of extensive and highly permeable aquifers emphasises the need for correct hydrogeotechnical characterisation, particularly to avoid possible foundation settlement in locally saturated areas or in zones of lower structural cohesion, such as fine sands and silts.
Seismicity in Funes is classified as very low, with only five events in the last thirty years and a very low maximum magnitude, Mmax 1.7, so this parameter does not condition the structural design. The non-clayey substrate eliminates the risk associated with expansive soils; however, the presence of karst requires the rigorous verification of cavities or voids prior to any foundation. In addition, the presence of gypsum, anhydrite and salts implies a clear risk of dissolution processes, making it the main geotechnical constraint to be assessed in the preliminary ground investigation.
