Types of ground in Foz
In Foz, the subsoil is dominated by the presence of slates, schists and, to a lesser extent, granite, gneiss and other igneous rocks, providing a high-consistency foundation and excellent bearing capacity. Sandstones and conglomerates occur only occasionally, whereas layers of hard clays or marls, as well as fine sands and silts, are rare. Taken together, these lithologies favour direct shallow foundations, although the predominant formations have low permeability, which minimises the risks associated with seepage, but may affect the drainage of shallow groundwater.
Seismicity in Foz is very low, with only 6 recorded events over 30 years and a maximum magnitude of 4.2, representing a low risk from the seismic point of view. There are no risks associated with karst or the presence of expansive soils, since the predominant substrate rules out the possibility of significant expansivity. Thus, the most relevant geotechnical factor in Foz is the uniformity and low permeability of the substrate, which requires particular attention to drainage during the design and construction phases.
