Types of ground in Fabero

In Fabero, slates and schists predominate, accounting for more than half of the soils in the municipality. These lithologies, generally of an impervious nature, contribute to high stability in bearing capacity and allow the execution of conventional shallow foundations in most cases. Associated sandstones and conglomerates are also found, recognised for their good mechanical behaviour. It is, however, relevant that deltaic-derived silts and peats are occasionally present—materials with very low competence that should be avoided as a bearing layer in foundations, due to the high risk of differential settlement.

Seismicity in Fabero is classified as high, with 200 events recorded in the last 30 years, although no magnitudes greater than 3.5 have been detected. Therefore, although direct seismic hazard is moderate, it does not reach values that would require severe structural constraints under regulations. There is no evidence of karst or of expansive processes, since the non-clayey substrate removes the risk of expansive soils. The main attention should be directed to identifying potential areas with silts or peats, as these are the most determining geotechnical factor for the viability of the foundations.
