Types of ground in Etxarri Aranatz
In Etxarri Aranatz, the predominant ground is composed of formations of limestones, dolomites and marbles, representing more than 79% of the substrate. These materials are characterised by high strength and load-bearing capacity, which generally makes them favourable for shallow foundations. However, the local presence of sandstones, conglomerates and flysch, as well as layers of fine sands and silts in a lesser proportion, can influence locally the bearing conditions, especially in areas with shallow aquifers associated with the ground’s low permeability.
Seismic activity in the area is very low, with barely two recorded events in the last three decades and a maximum magnitude of 1.8, so seismicity is not a relevant factor to consider in structural design. Moreover, as the substrate is non-clayey, the risk of expansivity is ruled out. Nevertheless, the development of karst processes in the carbonate formations requires an exhaustive verification of the stability and continuity of the rock mass before defining the foundation, thus constituting the main geotechnical constraint for the locality.
